You mentioned grip strength in one section and last week I was at

Wal-Mart picking up 105 brick land scaping blocks and the kid in the yard was helping me load them up.

So who is this Coach Henkin anyway?




Josh Henkin is the "in demand" coach when it comes to true functional strength training. He has lectured at national conferences, Division I college strength and conditioning programs and some of the top fitness facilities. Coach Henkin has also had many of his articles published in Nationwide publications. His innovative training methods are highly popular and his ability to overcome challenges and succeed where many fail is that to be admired.

He is a graduate of Arizona State University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science/Physical Education. Coach Henkin puts a great value on education and has been through dozens of programs and has spent literally thousands of hours studying exercise science and functional anatomy.

While his background is extremely impressive especially in an industry that is certifying “trainers” in a weekend course, his personal experience is what makes his system so unique.

After two years of playing Basketball for ASU Josh suffered several injuries that forced him into early retirement. A devastating ankle injury that threatened his ability to walk normally, several slipped disks, and major back pain caused him to loose the use of his right leg for a time.

This sent him on a mission to learn all he could and develop a system that could improve his own health and allow him to become to return to athletics once again. He experimented with dozens of different methods, techniques and programs and has spent thousands of dollars trying to achieve what doctors considered next-to impossible.



What happened to change things?

Then Coach Henkin came across the book, Dinosaur Training, which introduced him to the ancient concept of implementing odd objects into your strength program. This was very different from the conventional body building style that we all know too well.

His strong determination kept him returning to the gym day after day; despite the incredible pain sensation he had to fight. However slowly things began to change and this Athlete finally had his comeback by competing in his first Strongman Competition.

Yes, even with the odds stacked against him and loosing the use of his right leg for a time, Coach Henkin was now able to carry 500 pounds, flip 900lb tires and lift 350lb stones.




Everyone makes promises but few actually come through and even fewer have a credible Coach putting his reputation on the line.

After a triumphant comeback, Coach Henkin was now ready to take his incredible experience and use it to help others achieve their dreams.

       Great, how do I make my own Sandbag?

Well as Coach Henkin can personally tell you after years of making his own homemade Sandbags, unless you train at the beach you better enjoy cleaning up sand!

Having dozens of bags break and leak sand all over the gym he was inspired to create one that could hold up to the use and abuse of his training sessions. He needed a bag that could be kicked, thrown, and beat up day after day.

So you are welcome to make your own as sandbags in any form are an awesome addition to your program, but keep a few things in mind…

-         Sweeping up 50 pounds of sand is not the best way to spend your lunch hour!
- If you are a trainer then you expect clients to pay you well for your time; will a patched, beat up, duck taped sandbag really make you look like the educated professional you are?

-         Many exercises including shouldering, involves the bag to be in full contact with your body.  Rough, cheap material will aggravate your skin or worse your clients! 

-         Coach Henkin's Ultimate Sandbags features three different handles allowing you a whole new range of exercises and modifications that have never been used in sandbag training before.

The handles that are placed on various spots on the bag ramp up the variations you can use with exercises such as cleans, military presses, front squats and bent over rows. Some may argue using the handles takes away from the grip factor, but, having more variations always adds to the fun of the workout and you can always grab the bag or the outer handles for extra grip work.

 

My partner had a REAL tough time cleaning the bag using the handles because the weight kept pulling the bag down. It required a different motion than he was used to and certainly turned the clean and press movement into a wrestling match!
